Gin has become the talk of the time and rightly so. Even Julia Child once gave credit to gin (and red meat) when it came to her longevity. Pretoria has also jumped on the bandwagon, proudly boasting a few establishments with this trendy drink on their menus. The city even has its own Gin bar, Carbon Bistro, and Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel in Centurion that hosts an annual gin fest in March. With Summer here and the need for a cold, refreshing drink on everyone’s mind we decided to recommend a few of the best gin joints in Pretoria:
This award-winning bistro in Dey Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, has the largest selection of craft and local gins in Gauteng. They have sourced gins from Stilbaai, Cape Town, the Karoo, KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo, Calitzdorp and the Cradle of Humankind, to mention a few. They’ve also sourced gins from around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Ireland. Their menu caters for trendy diners, offering small nibbles, sharing platters, Wagyu burgers and even vegetarian dishes.

Although they are better known for their large selection of craft beers, Capital Craft at the Greenlyn Village Centre in Menlopark also serves quite a few local, as well as international gins. The one thing that makes them stand out from the rest is that they serve different gin tasting platters, with five or six infused and crafted gins for you to explore. It’s served with ice and a Fitch and Tonic water on the side. Founders, Johan, Willie, Henk and Niel, made it their mission to educate the public about the craft industry and it seems that they’ve done something right.

Old Town Italy
It’s not only the freshly made gnocchi and fluffy bombolini that draws diners to this Italian inspired restaurant at Menlyn Maine. They also serve delightful gin-based cocktails. You can choose to go with a classic negroni or martini or you can try their Malfy Lemon Squeeze or Wallflower cocktail. The restaurant forms part of the food court at Menlyn Maine and has an atmosphere that draws you in and keeps you there. They have an impressive shop inside as well, with top quality cold meat and cheese selections.

The Gin Box
We asked a few locals where their favourite gin drinking spots in Pretoria were and Suzeth Kotze replied: “At home because then I can drink as much as I want to.” If you feel the same, why not try The Gin Box, a craft gin club that delivers a box full of surprises to your doorstep every month, second month or quarter, depending on your preference. The box includes notes from the distiller, a full-sized bottle of gin from one of the finest South African distilleries (including exclusive and limited editions) and a selection of gourmet treats, tonics, cocktail ideas and other complementing goodies.
