Theatres worth visiting in Pretoria

The Capital City already offers residents and visitors so much to see and do in terms of cultural activities that it’s often difficult to decide on where to go – not that we’re complaining! 

This month we’re focusing on theatre – from dramatic productions to comedy and musicals. It may not all be your cup of tea, but the shows and productions change constantly, and the level of local talent is impressiveto say the leastWe’ve narrowed down the list of theatres worth visiting in Pretoria – some traditional, some unconventional.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN STATE THEATRE 

The icon of performing arts in the Capital, which has played home to theatrical greats such as Cats, Sarafina and The Phantom of the Opera – the South African State Theatre, has been in existence since 1981. Considered as one of the greatest performing arts facilities in Africa, the State Theatre encompasses all genres including comedy, dance, drama, festivals, concerts, musicals, opera and even poetry and jazz, ensuring a diverse program of events. The Theatre is also home to a restaurant, lounge, bar as well as a shop and gallery, ensuring plenty of entertainment while waiting for the show to start.

THE ATTERBURY THEATRE 

Situated in a prime location within the Lynnwood Bridge Retail development, Atterbury Theatre is used both as a classic concert hall, whilst simultaneously being optimally designed acoustically for modern shows and conferences. With show lineups that vary from music to plays and comedy to dance, the theatre caters for all genres, ages and preferences. The centre itself has a number of restaurants and coffee shops for pre-show dinners and postshow coffees and “ones for the road”.

If you’re looking for an unconventional theatre option, then why not have a night out at Beefcakes. Burgers served by topless waiters followed by theatrical entertainment from the resident drag queens – which can only mean an evening of laughter and sheepish grins. With themed shows on Wednesday and Thursday nights and Dinner Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings, it’s a perfect location for parties and group dates.
