Pretoria has some really cool theatres offering quality shows, and many people don’t realise that these cultural gems are right under their noses.
Here are our top 5 Pretoria-based theatres and some of their exciting, upcoming shows:
This theatre, situated at Lynnwood Bridge, hosts a number of performances monthly, from ballet productions to album launches. Enjoy an evening of guitar music by Nathan Smith on 2 March, where he will honour the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and more. The Royal Moscow Ballet will also be performing Romeo and Juliet at the Atterbury Theatre on 4 and 7 March and CH2 and Marcin Patrzalek will be collaborating in a show called GuitarWizards on the 8th of March. The theatre also caters for kids and you’ll be excited to see that the well-known Afrikaans show, Wielie Wielie Walie, is back on stage!
The Brooklyn Theatre is known for its classical concerts and brings some really impressive performers to Pretoria. On 9 March you can look forward to works by Handel and Bach. The Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing Karnaval van die Diere on the 13th and in April the Russian pianist, Elizaveta Ivanova, will be performing Passionate Reflections.

Situated right behind the Union Buildings, this theatre is rich in local arts and culture. Theatre fanatics (or inquisitives) can look forward to a production called Mad Matters, a comedy evening with Ian Wessels, Jannie du Toit’s performance of Koos du Plessis’ songs and poems, the theatre’s 16th birthday with a performance by Mathys Roets and also Amanda Strydom’s 40-year anniversary in the music industry.
This cozy theatre with its cellar venue hosts many smaller, intimate productions, but also bigger shows in its theatre that can take up to 220 guests. Events for March include Ons Lieflinge, the book launch of Ronald Muringai’s Fathering Sons and Timothy Kieswetter’s Mnr. Seks en Mev. Kopseer.

Knypie Kat Theatre
This intimate theatre is located in the heart of Eldoraigne and has an incredible atmosphere. It hosts numerous productions done by students from the Issie Venter Drama School and showcases really impressive talent. Training courses in public speaking for children and adults are presented at Knypiekat Theatre on a regular basis.
