Contrary to what you believe a butchery should be, The Meatsmith is full of surprises with a quaint restaurant section and delicious homemade treats like biltong fudge!
We like to describe The Meatsmith as Pretoria’s very own boutique butchery. Located at Queenswood Quarter, it is one of our favourite brunch and Friday afternoon get-together spots, with the friendly Deone available to greet you with her sparkling personality. There are many aspects to The Meatsmith that makes it unique, especially the fact that it’s not your usual clinical butchery, but a specially decorated space with craft beers, homemade rum and gin, freshly baked breads from Bread Gypsy and more. Of course, being a butchery, they also sell meat. Their meat is special with cuts you won’t find at any usual butchery. They’ve developed many unique cuts and meat products like lamb lollipops, the now very popular ribeye on the bone and lamb rump. They go out of their way to supply cuts and products that you won’t find anywhere else. The artisan breads offered at The Meatsmith are made by “probably the best bread baker in Pretoria,” Bread Gypsy. The breads are all stoneground and wood oven baked. The Meatsmith also offers regular tastings with different sauces and breads for patrons to try out and you can buy additional products like honey, chilli oil, Chimichurri and other sauces.
Weekends at The Meatsmith are crazy! Their fridges get stocked to their maximum on Friday mornings for the rush of customers who come to buy meat for the weekend’s braai or even the regulars who pitch for their weekly red velvet and cappuccino fix. “It’s great to see how locals enjoy every aspect of what we offer,” says Kobus, owner of The Meatsmith.
Kobus appreciates creative processes, from art and music to anything that can be created. During a tour in Rome, he realised that he would like to take a shot at making beer and today you can taste his Brüwger branded beer in his very own butchery and restaurant! It also did not stop there – try out his very own craft Brüwger Marula infused gin and Brüwger Premium craft Rum, which should give you an authentic Pretoria experience!
The Meatsmith is open on weekdays from 09h00 to 18h00, Saturdays from 09h00 to 17h00 and Sundays from 09h00 to 14h00. They have just launched a new menu, so be sure to try it out!
