Did you know that there’s a Brickfair heading your way this weekend, HP LEGO® fans? Here’s what founding member of zaLUG, Joe Kirsten has to say about it…
Brickfair started eight years ago by a family with a passion for LEGO®. At the first expo there were less than 30 tables and very few exhibitors. Brickfair has since grown to over 250 tables showcasing LEGO collections and LEGO lovers’ own creations with more than 100 adult and kid fans of LEGO taking part. This is also the second year that members of CapeLUG will drive up from Cape Town to display their creations.
Brickfair is an annual event where fans of LEGO are given the opportunity to showcase their personal collection or to show what they have created from their own imagination using LEGO elements. It is a weekend where members of different LEGO clubs and members of the public get together to marvel at each other’s creations and learn from one another. It is also a fantastic opportunity for the public to come and have a look at what is possible with LEGO bricks at every level of creation and skill level. Brickfair is a free event and a great day out for the family.
My first Brickfair was in 2015 where I only made and sold LEGO jewellery. Since then I have created and displayed a variety of my own builds and creations at Brickfair – South Africa’s premier LEGO event. However, in 2019, we received news that the organisers could unfortunately no longer host this event, so I contacted a friend and we decided that we would take over the reins and do our best to make this event a success, because we did not want South African fans to lose out on this prestigious event. Willi and I started organising the event in July with assistance from the LEGO Certified Stores and Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.
There will be more than 130 exhibitors with over 250 tables showcasing LEGO creations and collections!
So much! We have general public exhibitors with a massive working LEGO train display. There will be lots of kids (and big kids) showing what they have created using LEGO and their own imagination. Some of the LEGO themes to look forward to include Star Wars, Super-Heroes and Harry Potter. Members will showcase their own creations from their own creative designs that include a Castle themed LEGO build, a large Zoo, Steampunk and Space.
Brickfair 2019 will also have two large collaborative builds, such as Micropolis, a mini-city landscape built by a group of LEGO lovers, and the Great Ball Contraption – the biggest crowd-pleaser at any LEGO event. This year, the public will be able to see the largest Micropolis and largest Great Ball Contraption ever displayed on the African continent!
There are loads of activities in store for Brickfair visitors, including bowling, hopscotch, a play pit and a colouring corner just for the kids.
The Brickfair will be taking place at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre on 26 and 27 October – be sure to pop in!
