Dining Out

Hotspot: Filos… meaning friend

March 27, 2020, Author: bianca

A cosy restaurant where communities, families and friends come together to share an experience straight out of Greece.

Nicolas opened Filos’ doors for the first time in 2017 and since then he has opened restaurants at two more locations. For Nicolas, who grew up in the Greek community, it was important to create a space where people can come together and relax while sharing a meal and he wanted to make that meal exquisite! All Filos’ ingredients are imported from Greece – from the vine leaves to the olive oil. Nicolas is passionate about food, but more so about people. He wants you to bring your whole family for this culinary adventure. At his original restaurant in Brooklyn, situated at the same location as the Greek Orthodox Church, there is also a big lawn where your kids can play freely and safely.

We were treated to the full Greek experience which started off with pre-dinner ouzo. You should definitely practice getting accustomed to this strong liquorice-smelling drink! We then indulged in authentic Mediterranean cuisine – from spanakopita with spinach, feta and cheese to halloumi, kebabs, fried calamari, keftedes, dolmades, pita with tzatziki and the freshest Greek salad. Food absolutely fit for a king! Your experience doesn’t have to stop here as Filos stocks a wide variety of Greek goodies that you can purchase to take home with you as well. Kali orexi!

Filos regularly hosts Greek evenings. At R250 per person, you can expect a live band, belly dancers, free ouzo and a Greek buffet. You can even break a few plates in true Greek style!
